How is your role different in Om Shanti Om?
However clichéd it would sound but my role in Om Shanti Om is actually different.Everyone right from Shah Rukh to Shreyas to me play the role of extras. But we behave and talk like superstars in the movie which is quite funny. Dressed in the outfits of 70’s with high buns, thick eye liner etc, I play a funny present age mom to Shah Rukh. I’ve never done anything like this before.
Devdas, Main Hoon Na, Veer-Zaara, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and now Om Shanti Om. How was it working with King Khan?
My interaction with Shah Rukh dates back to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Darr when he worked with Anupam. So my working with him was like working with a friend. Honestly, there are people who want to win by overshadowing others but Shah Rukh never cuts down on anyone’s role or dialogues and is never insecure. Anupam and I keep discussing that he is a powerhouse of energy.
You have received acclaim in both art and commercial cinema. What appeals to you more?
Frankly, I like art movies. They have more scope for an actor to showcase his talent. Khamosh Pani and Bariwali are really close to my heart.
Anupam as a hubby or Anupam as an actor?
Anupam as a person. Even before our marriage Anupam and I were very good friends. After my break-up with Gautam, Anupam was there for me like a friend, philosopher and guide. Even after so many years of our marriage he pampers me silly at times.
Both of you are excellent artistes, does work ever come in way of personal life?
Anupam is far more experienced an actor than me. I just happened to take up acting. I was happy playing his wife. But every relationship has its ups and downs. Not just work but even slightest of matters can create a rift. But if a partner is committed, honest and respectful, relationships just mature with each passing day.
Sikander is all set to make his acting debut with Sanjay Gupta’s Woodstock Villa. How would you rate him on a scale of 1-10?
Well, Anupam and I are very critical about each other and our son’s work. Sikander is indeed a good actor. Ideally it should be for the audience to decide, but still I would rate him nine.
Celebrity children get a ready platform as compared to freshers. Comment.
Absolutely! The first step for celebrity children is indeed easier. That’s because producer’s half the battle is already won because of the curiosity people have to see celebrity kids’ work. But ironically, in the second phase it gets equally difficult for them to sustain themselves if they do not justify their profession.
What’s next?
I have almost finished with Singh is King which is a comedy movie, Mummyji would also release shortly. And a movie with Warner Brothers is in pipeline.
